Butler homered in Kansas's victory over Red Sox

Billy Butler hit a three-run homer and Luke Hochevar pitched seven strong innings to lead Kansas City to a 4-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox.

Hochevar (7-8) allowed two runs, six hits and walked one, as well as matching their best season record with six strikeouts. He retired 14 of the last 16 batters he faced and gave only one extra-base hit in two of the Dominican Yamaico Navarro in the third inning.

Hochevar left the game with a 4-2 lead, and Dustin Pedroia led off the eighth inning with a home run high over the Green Monster on a shot by Greg Holland with account 3-2. Batters Faced But Holland withdrew to Adrian Gonzalez, Kevin Youkilis and David Ortiz to end the inning, and Joakim Soria entered the field for the ninth.

Josh Beckett (9-4) lost for the first time in a month, by giving up four runs, five hits and three walks while striking out eight. Before Thursday's loss, the Red Sox had won six of their last seven games to get for the first time in three games this season before the New York Yankees, second in the Eastern Division of the American League.

For the Royals, the Venezuelan Alcides Escobar 3-1.

For the Red Sox, the Mexican Gonzalez 4-2. Dominicans Ortiz Navarro 4-0 and 4-1 with a run scored.
