Mariners 5 - Red Sox 3 - Boston dominated bu Furbush

Charlie Furbush on Sunday gave up one run in seven innings, the longest distance of his career, Casper Wells homered and scored two runs and the Seattle Mariners beat Red Sox 5-3 in Boston.

Seattle took two of three games against the leaders of the Eastern Division of the American League.

For the first time since late June, the Red Sox lost a series. Their advantage in the division fell a half game after escorts New York Yankees did not play Sunday because of rain.

Furbush (3-4) held off the bat as the Red Sox got four hits in his 11th season opener. He had the most strikeouts in his career with six hits and did not admit in the first three innings.

Tim Wakefield (6-5) lost his second straight decision and fell to the Mariners for the second time this season. In late July, Wakefield gave up 10 hits and seven runs in Seattle.

On Sunday, Wakefield received the credit of the complete game after throwing eight innings, allowing four runs and nine hits. He had four strikeouts for the fourth straight start but was unable to achieve victory number 200 in his career.
